Looking down a road at the new Elgin, Texas police department building that sits in the historic section of downtown Elgin, across the street from an expanded community park.

The Elgin, TX Police Department had quite the challenge: its small 102-year-old downtown building had far outlived its useful life, but they thought that a new building concept could not be achieved with their budget. After FGMA proactively presented a comparison of a renovation/addition concept vs. an all-new construction concept, it became clear that the all-new construction layout would provide the best functionality at almost the same cost. FGMA then collaborated with the staff and city throughout the entire process to create a design that met operational, design and downtown goals.

In his own words: Elgin, TX Police Chief Chris Noble shares his story of the department's needs, working with FGMA and how the new building has been received.

The new building design had to meet the Historical Commission’s requirements so that it would fit in with the historic downtown area. The building’s contextual design uses varied building forms and distinctive roofline accents, unique masonry details and window shapes that draw inspiration from its characteristic neighbors while preventing direct sightlines of staff inside for safety and security reasons.

Tripling the size of their previous police station next door, the new facility now has better flow, improved technology, enhanced security and growth potential for all police operations, including patrol, detectives, administration, records, evidence storage and short-term holding. An upstairs training room overlooks the expanded Veterans Memorial Park and provides opportunities for in-house training as well as meetings with the greater community.

“This modern building reflects ... a visible commitment to service, integrity and collaboration embedded in the heart of our city,” said Police Chief Chris Noble.

Planning began in 2022, and the city recently held a grand opening ceremony in April 2025.
