New Edwardsville Fire Station No. 3 Provides Quick Access to University

Edwardsville Fire Department celebrated the grand opening of its new Fire Station No. 3 on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus with an official ribbon cutting and open house on Saturday, April 22.

FGM Architects was hired to design the new 9,110 sf satellite fire station in addition to the City of Edwardsville Headquarters Public Safety Facility. The city’s goal was to improve response time to the thousands of students at Southern Illinois University’s campus. With the new building literally on campus, it provides quick access to the growing college campus and extends the abilities of the Edwardsville Fire Department to a previously remote section of the city.

A major challenge for this project was to provide an external architectural expression that complements the existing buildings on campus. The campus’s specific requirements guided the station’s overall look, including the brick used as well as the established color scheme. The station was designed to capture the modern expression of the buildings on campus, which was established in 1957.
